Alex Ferguson was born on 31 December 1941 in Glasgow, Scotland. His father, Alexander Beaton Ferguson, worked in the shipbuilding industry, and his mother was named Elizabeth Ferguson. He grew up alongside his younger brother, Martin. Alex began his education at Broomloan Road Primary School and later attended Govan High School.
Ferguson began his footballing journey at the age of 16, though he did not sign his first professional contract until joining Dunfermline Athletic in 1964. As a striker, he had a respectable playing career, scoring 171 goals in 317 appearances across various clubs, including St Johnstone, Dunfermline, Rangers, Falkirk, and Ayr United. He retired from playing in 1974 to pursue a career in football management.
In 1974, Ferguson took on his first managerial position with East Stirlingshire, quickly gaining a reputation for discipline and tactical awareness. Later that year, he became manager of St Mirren, where he significantly improved the team’s performance. Despite his success, his tenure ended controversially in 1978 when he was dismissed by the club.
Ferguson's next role was with Aberdeen, where he achieved remarkable success. Under his management, Aberdeen won numerous titles, including the Scottish Premier Division, Scottish Cup, and the 1983 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, defeating Real Madrid in the final. His achievements at Aberdeen brought him national attention and cemented his status as one of Scotland’s top managers.
