Amy Christine Dumas, known professionally as Lita, was born on April 14, 1975, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She grew up in Georgia and graduated from Lassiter High School in Marietta. She later attended Georgia State University but left before completing her degree. Amy developed an early passion for wrestling after watching Rey Mysterio Jr. on an episode of WCW Monday Nitro, which sparked her interest in pursuing a career in the sport.
Determined to build a foundation in wrestling, Amy moved to Mexico to train professionally. She funded her training by performing at a nightclub under the name Misty. In Mexico, she trained with experienced wrestlers including Kevin Quinn and Ricky Santana and gained in-ring experience performing for various regional promotions, most notably the Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL). Her time in Mexico introduced her to lucha libre, an influential style that shaped her wrestling persona and in-ring technique.
Upon returning to the United States, Amy began wrestling for Maryland Championship Wrestling, where she adopted the ring name Angelica. Her time on the independent circuit helped refine her character and caught the attention of larger promotions. She eventually signed with the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE), where she debuted under the ring name Lita in 1999. Known for her high-flying style and charismatic presence, Lita quickly became one of the most popular female wrestlers during WWE’s Attitude and Ruthless Aggression eras.
During her time in WWE, Lita became a four-time WWE Women’s Champion and played a pivotal role in revolutionizing women’s wrestling. She had memorable feuds and alliances with wrestlers such as Trish Stratus, Edge, and The Hardy Boyz. Her dynamic in-ring style and fearless persona set new standards for women competitors in the industry. In recognition of her contributions, Lita was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2014.
