In 1992 when she was competing during the U.S. Olympic Trials she was on the 4th place. Because of this she did not get a place in the Olympic team. During her years at the Colorado State University she broke for the first time the 50-yard freestyle record at the NCAA championship. Also, in 1994 she was designated the NCAA Female Swimmer of the Year. After she graduated she moved to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

She participated in other competitions but unfortunately she had a shoulder injury that required many surgeries and almost a year without training. However, during the 2000 Summer Olympics, she won 2 gold medals for 4x100 medley relay and 4x100 freestyle relay. She placed 4th in the 50 meter freestyle. Van Dyken is one of the few Olympic games participants that has only gold medals.

Even though Amy Van Dyken was a client at BALCO she never used steroids. Her testify was confirmed by the test results that came back negative for performance enhancing drugs.
Life after retiring
Even though most of her life was dedicated to sports, she did have extra activities. After the 2000 Olympics, she retired. She got married to Tom Rouen, former NFL punter. She was involved in speaking in schools, encouraging young talents to pursue their dreams. She was also a DJ for a sport radio show in Arizona, and she even was a reporter for Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos football teams. She was the only American swimmer to be inserted in the International Swimming Hall of Fame’s Class of 2007 and in the Olympic Hall of Fame in July 2008. From 2010 to 2011 she was the morning drive-time host of the show Chris and Amy in the morning on The Peak FM, Phoenix, Arizona. On July 12, 2011, she resigned from her radio job in order to attend some family issues that deter her to go back to Denver.
