Torv attended Benowa State High School, graduating in 1996, and later enrolled at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), where she earned a degree in Performing Arts in 2001.

Two years after graduating from NIDA, Torv began her professional acting career with the Bell Shakespeare Company, playing the role of Ophelia in John Bell’s adaptation of "Hamlet." Her stage success helped launch her television career, and she gained recognition for her role as Nikki Martel in the Australian television series "The Secret Life of Us."
