Annabella Sciorra (full name Annabella Gloria Philomena Sciorra) was born on March 29, 1960, in Wethersfield, Connecticut, to Italian-American parents. Her mother was a homemaker, and her father, a veterinarian, emigrated from Carunchio, Abruzzo, Italy, in 1951. When she was 11 years old, the family relocated to Brooklyn, New York City.
Sciorra attended South Shore High School in the Canarsie neighborhood of Brooklyn, graduating in 1978. Initially interested in dance, she studied ballet and other dance forms as a child. As a teenager, she also began taking drama classes at the Herbert Berghof Studio and later attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, graduating in 1980.
In 1981, Sciorra founded a repertory group at the Brass Ring Theater Company. Toward the late 1980s, she began acting professionally in television movies such as The Fortunate Pilgrim and True Love. Her performance in True Love earned her a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead.
Sciorra's early work captured the attention of major filmmakers, leading to her co-lead role in Spike Lee’s 1991 film Jungle Fever. She garnered broader acclaim for her performance in the psychological thriller The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992) and earned further recognition in Cop Land (1997).
Annabella gained considerable critical praise for her portrayal of Robin Williams’ grieving wife in the 1998 fantasy drama What Dreams May Come. Her memorable television work includes her role as Gloria Trillo in HBO's acclaimed series The Sopranos, for which she received an Emmy Award nomination in 2001.
In 2005, Sciorra joined the cast of Law & Order: Criminal Intent as Detective Carolyn Barek. She continued to appear in various television series, including The Good Wife, CSI, Touched by an Angel, Queens Supreme, and Mental.
