Bancroft was first married to lawyer Martin May from 1953 to 1957. In 1961, she met comedian and filmmaker Mel Brooks, whom she married in 1964. The couple had one son, writer Max Brooks, born on May 22, 1972.
Bancroft and Brooks enjoyed a long and supportive relationship, remaining married until her passing on June 6, 2005, from uterine cancer. Her legacy endures not only through her award-winning performances but also through her contributions to the advancement of women in film directing, notably through her involvement in the American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop for Women.
