During his childhood, he was an avid fan of the animated comedy series The Simpsons and aspired to become a cartoonist. His interest in media and the arts eventually transitioned into a passion for music.

College Years and Early Career

Fantano became deeply involved in music criticism in the 2000s while working as the music director for the Southern Connecticut State University college radio station. This role marked his formal entry into the world of music journalism and media production.

The Needle Drop and Rise to Prominence

In 2007, Fantano joined Connecticut Public Radio, where he launched "The Needle Drop," a program initially focused on delivering text-based reviews of emerging and established music acts. The project eventually evolved into a video blog format in 2009, coinciding with the rise of video content on digital platforms.

Fantano posted his first video reviews on YouTube, where he reviews a wide range of music genres including pop, hip-hop, electronic, folk, and rock. Known online as “the internet’s busiest music nerd,” Fantano quickly gained a following for his in-depth critique and analytical approach.
