Austin Butler is an American actor and singer known for his work in both television and film. He was born in Anaheim, California, to David Butler and Lori Anne Howell, an aesthetician. He has one older sister, Ashley Butler, born in 1986, who has worked as a background actor, including on the show Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide.
Butler's entry into the entertainment industry began when he was 13 years old, after being approached by a representative from a background acting management company at the Orange County Fair. This initial opportunity led to acting classes and eventually developed into a passion for performance.
Butler attended public school until the seventh grade before transitioning to homeschooling. This change accommodated his increasingly demanding work schedule. He continued homeschooling through the tenth grade and subsequently completed the California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE) to formally conclude his high school education.
Butler began his professional acting career with small roles and gradually moved into more prominent positions. One of his early notable television roles was playing James Garrett in Zoey 101. He later portrayed Jordan Gallagher in Ruby & The Rockits, Jones Mager in Life Unexpected, and Sebastian Kydd in The Carrie Diaries. Although previously misattributed, Butler did not play a role named James Wilke Wilkerson in Switched at Birth. His actual involvement in the show was as James "Wilke" Wilkerson, a recurring character in its first season.
