Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch was born on 19 July 1976 in London, England. His parents, actors Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham, raised him in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. He has a half-sister, Tracy Peacock, from his mother’s first marriage. Cumberbatch was educated at Brambletye School and later at Harrow School, one of the UK's prestigious independent schools.
After completing school, Cumberbatch took a gap year and volunteered as an English teacher at a Tibetan monastery in Darjeeling, India. He then enrolled at the University of Manchester, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Drama. Following this, he pursued advanced training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), graduating with a Master of Arts in Classical Acting.
Cumberbatch began his acting career in the theater, performing in major roles at renowned venues such as the Royal Court Theatre, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, Almeida Theatre, and the Royal National Theatre.
