Bobby Fischer is considered by many to be the greatest chess player of all time; he was an American chess grandmaster and the eleventh World Chess Champion. Bobby Fischer was born Robert James Fischer on March 9, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois. Bobby Fischer became the United States Chess Champion at the age of fourteen, and at fifteen, he became the youngest grandmaster. Fischer won the 1963-64 United States Championship with eleven wins in eleven games, the only perfect score in the history of the tournament. Bobby Fischer achieve international fame when he won the 1972 World Chess Championship, defeating Boris Spassky of the USSR, in what was publicized as a Cold War confrontation. Fischer refused to defend his title in 1975 and his behavior became erratic and secluded.

He disappeared from the public eye; re-emerging twenty years later to participate in an unofficial re-match with Spassky, which was held in Yugoslavia. This participation led to a conflict with the United States government, which was imposing sanctions on Yugoslavia at the time, and a warrant was initiated for his arrest. Bobby Fischer died from renal failure at the National University Hospital of Iceland on January 17, 2008, at the age of sixty four.
