Bonner was born on June 1, 1987 in Odessa, Texas. He grew up on a ranch training horses with his siblings. His father was also a professional rodeo cowboy for over fifteen years. Bonner joined the junior rodeo when he was ten years old and ultimately used bull riding scholorships to pay his way through Odessa College and Texas Tech University. He won his first professional bull riding world title at age 20. He won the 2007 Championship Bull Riding's title of World Champion.
He placed forth in the Professional Bull Riders World Finals in 2015. He also performed as a stunt double for Scott Eastwood in the 2014 movie The Longest Ride. He sustained a neck injury while dismounting from a bull in January of 2016 and was temporarily paralyzed, but ultimately made a full recovery. The injury did effectively end his bull riding career, however, encouraging him to take up modelling. He was featured in Cosmopolitan magazine in August.
