Professional Career and Playing Style

Marchand is known both for his offensive talent and his aggressive, controversial style of play. Throughout his NHL career, he has faced multiple disciplinary actions for on-ice behavior. In 2011, he received a two-game suspension for elbowing an opponent and was fined $2,500 for slew-footing. In 2012, he was suspended five games for a low-bridge hit deemed predatory. In 2015, he received another five-game suspension for clipping and slew-footing incidents. February 2017 saw Marchand fined $10,000—the maximum allowable—for a dangerous trip. In 2018, he was suspended again for five games and fined $7,000 in a separate incident.

Marchand also drew media attention for unusual on-ice antics, including licking or kissing opposing players such as Ryan Callahan and Leo Komarov. While controversial, these incidents contributed to his reputation as a player who plays on the edge.

International Achievements

Despite his polarizing conduct, Marchand has had a successful international career representing Team Canada. He won gold medals at the 2007 and 2008 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. Additionally, he was part of the Canadian teams that captured gold at the 2016 IIHF World Championship and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. His contributions, particularly in the 2016 World Cup, where he scored the tournament-winning goal, highlight his status as a top-tier international player.
