Carmelo Anthony was born on May 29, 1984, in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City. He is the son of Mary Anthony and Carmelo Iriarte. His father passed away from cancer when Carmelo was just two years old, leaving his mother as the sole provider for the family. She worked as a housekeeper to support her children. After his father's death, the family moved to the West Baltimore neighborhood, a community challenged by crime and economic hardship, where Anthony spent much of his childhood.
Despite the tough environment, Anthony showed a strong interest in basketball from a young age while maintaining decent academic performance. His mother supported his passion and enrolled him at Towson Catholic High School in Baltimore. By the time he graduated from high school, Anthony had grown to 6 feet 5 inches tall, showcasing his physical potential for the sport.
He later transferred to Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, a school known for its elite basketball program. At Oak Hill, Anthony became one of the top high school prospects in the country. Although he could have declared for the NBA draft directly after high school, his mother encouraged him to attend college instead. He subsequently enrolled at Syracuse University.
During his freshman year at Syracuse, Anthony had an immediate impact on the team. His outstanding performance helped lead the Syracuse Orangemen to their first NCAA Championship title in 2003. That same year, he declared for the NBA Draft and was selected as the third overall pick by the Denver Nuggets.
Anthony quickly became known for his scoring prowess in the NBA. Although the Nuggets struggled in the early playoffs, he made a name for himself as a highly skilled forward. In the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, he was part of the U.S. men's basketball team that won the bronze medal.
During the 2005–06 NBA season, Anthony faced criticism for issues related to discipline and work ethic, with some commentators labeling him talented but inconsistent. Nevertheless, he worked diligently to address those criticisms. By the end of 2006, Anthony had become one of the league’s top scorers and emerged as a leader for the Nuggets. That year, he donated $1.5 million to establish the Carmelo Anthony Youth Development Center in Baltimore, a testament to his commitment to his community.
