Kirkwood would become the main weather presenter for the show BBC Breakfast in 2008 and remain there for five years.
She also regularly contributes to BBC1's "The One Show" and has been featured as a guest on the children's show, "Hacker Time," which aired on CBBC. In July 2011, Kirkwood co-presented "The Great British Weather" show, which airs on BBC One. She also appeared on the BBC One panel show titled "Would I Lie To You?" and the "Breakfast" show where she regularly presented the weather. When the "Breakfast" show shifted to Salford, Kirkwood continued living in London and continued making appearances on the show through a video link.
In 2015, Kirkwood would appear on the show "Strictly Come Dancing," where she took part in the thirteenth series. Her dance partner on the show was professional dancer Pasha Kovalev. Kirkwood impressed the judges like Len Goodman at the front with her foxtrot. When describing Carol's performance, Goodman said that clouds just parted and a "ray of sunshine" came onto the floor. Len Goodman asked Carol to come out and make him smile with her routine.
When she took a break from the "Breakfast" show, it was because she was enjoying a well-deserved vacation since she took very little time off and had built up a lot of leave. She returned to screens leaving fans delighted to see her back, with many congratulating her for her return on Twitter. Her fan base expressed their delight at seeing her return to the "Breakfast" show, with one user tweeting, "Hi Carol, great to have you back. Welcome back and take care."
Kirkwood has won many accolades in her career; among them is the TRIC award for best TV Weather Presenter in 2003, 2008, 2009, and 2012 through 2017. The 2003 Television and Radio Industry's Club Award (TRIC) was very dear to her since it was the first year they included weather as a category in the awards. On November 17, 2015, she received an Honorary Fellowship from HRH Princess Anne for "contributions to broadcasting" at Inverness College, part of the University of the Highlands and Islands.
Kirkwood's many accomplishments while in the broadcasting industry include covering live events such as the Wimbledon Tennis Championships since 2005, where she co-hosted with Susan Powell and Dan Corbett.
One of Kirkwood's main struggles throughout her career has been her eye which has started losing vision. She has had minor surgery to her eye to help her regain her vision, but with a droopy eyelid, seeing out of sight is becoming increasingly difficult. She first reported a problem with her eyes when the audience sent her messages on Twitter telling her she should get her eyesight checked out after appearing on BBC Breakfast with a bloodshot and swollen eye.
