Charles Osgood was born on January 8, 1933 in the Bronx, New York City. As a young boy, he moved with his family to the Liberty Heights neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. He completed his primary schooling at the St. Cecilia High School in Englewood, New Jersey. He went on to graduate from Fordham University in 1954 where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics.

Charles was known as CBS Radio’s “Poet in Residence” because most of his commentaries on the news usually delivered in poetic verse. He started out at CBS News as a New York-based correspondent in 1971.
Before his big break with CBS News, Osgood worked as a morning anchor and reporter for WCBS Newsradio 88 in New York from 1967 to 1971. He also was employed for four years on general assignment for ABC News and was the program manager at WGMS/Washington, DC.
Osgood also wrote for a syndicated newspaper column, which was distributed by Tribune Media Services. Osgood replaced Charles Kuralt as the host of CBS Sunday Morning on April 10, 1994. In 2016, Osgood left his post on CBS Sunday Morning due to his age and desire to just focus on his radio show, The Osgood File.
He received the honor of being inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1990.

In 2017, Charles Osgood made an announcement that he would end his daily radio program, “The Osgood File,”. He had been the host of his daily radio commentaries ever since 1971. At the same time, he would end with one of network broadcasting’s longest careers. His announcement came as a shock because the 85 year old was still seen as very vibrant and he had just signed a new deal with Westwood One, the distributor of his show.
In an interview with News Day, he talked about leaving the industry and the cause of his exit, “Although I was very much looking forward to continuing to see you on the radio, unfortunately my health and doctors will now not allow it. So I will retire from ‘The Osgood File’ and radio at the end of the year with great appreciation for all the success we’ve had together.
I have two different kinds of cancer, and have had them treated at Sloan Kettering. I think they’re doing well, or should say they’re not getting worse. But I do find at my age there is a time for all things to come to an end.
