Resolution and Legal Vindication
In 2017, the case was dismissed by Judge Sarah S. Vance in federal court, citing inconsistencies in the accuser’s narrative and procedural issues, including improper service of the initial lawsuit. As a result, the prior judgment was vacated, and Powell was cleared of the civil charges.
Following the dismissal, Powell’s legal representation issued a public statement: “Mr. Powell feels blessed. Mr. Powell feels vindicated. He prays for Ms. Myers. And he thanks his fans. He doesn’t have any animosity in his heart. His father always told him the truth will set you free.”
Detective Damita Williams of the New Orleans Police Department, who participated in the investigation, also commented: “Through my investigation I found Ms. Kiyante Myers’ claims to be unfounded. Specifically because when I asked Ms. Kiyante Myers was she forced or intimidated to commit any sexual intercourse with Mr. Powell, she replied ‘No.’”
The conclusion of the case allowed Powell to move forward and refocus on his career. Although he endured a period of negative publicity, Powell expressed relief that the matter was resolved and his name was cleared. He has since returned to acting and continues to contribute to the entertainment industry.
