Colin Bland

Colin Bland was born as Kenneth Colin Bland and he was born in Bulawayo found in Southern Rhodesia in the year 1938. He is former cricketer who was playing in South Africa during 1960s. He was educated in Milton High School and he made the first class debut playing for Rhodesia when he was still a school boy and they were playing at MCC against Peter May. He continued and presented the school over 55 time’s since 1956 until 1968.

Afterwards, he played in South African provincial sides in Orange Free State and Eastern Province. He is elegant and tall and a right-handed batsman. He started to play in South African first Team in the year 1961 while he was a regular in 1966 until 1967. Since he was a South African during Apartheid time, Colin Bland was able to play only some game against New Zealand, Australia and England while the career got restricted to only 21 Tests. He was able to secure 1669 runs with three centuries. The highest score he got during Test is while playing against England in Johannesburg during the year 1964-1965. South Africa was still being 214, and it was only at 109 for four in a second innings but when Bland came in, he hit 144 not out in 4 hours and he saved this match.

Colin Bland’s fame was mostly found with his fielding ability. Through a common consent, he was considered to be finest cover fieldsman during his time and even for the entire playing history. He had a spectacular run out in Lord’s Test of Ken Barrington and dismissed Jim Parks in the same way. The match ended as a draw.

From his biography, Colin Bland was nominated as the Wisden Cricketer of The year in the year 1966 and he is among the two players who were honored to be depicted and accompanied with a portrait fielding and not while keeping, bowling or batting. When Peter Van Der Merwe was asked by Wisden in the year 1999 to give names of outstanding cricketers for Twentieth Century, he named Colin Bland while saying that he revolutionized attitude towards fielding and he had set the standards that none else has been able to equal.

Colin Bland retired in the year 1966-67, when he suffered an injury that forced him to be out in First Test. However, he continued as a South Africa player in first class cricket up to 1973-1974. The injury happens while playing against Australia, he crushed into the boundary fence when she was chasing a ball and this damage greatly his knee. He was known not to perform well with his bat and only but he was worth more in 30 runs.
