Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, Conan Christopher O'Brien comes from an Irish Catholic family. He graduated from Harvard University, where he served as president of the humor magazine Harvard Lampoon. During his college years, he also began his career in television writing, contributing to the sketch comedy series Not Necessarily the News.
Conan O'Brien rose to prominence as the host of NBC's Late Night with Conan O'Brien, a position he held from 1993 to 2009. He briefly hosted The Tonight Show before moving to TBS, where he launched the eponymous late-night talk show Conan, which aired from 2010 to 2021.
Throughout his career, O'Brien made several appearances in films and documentaries, often in small roles or as himself. In 1996, he appeared in Favorite Deadly Sins, followed by a role in the 1998 indie film Tomorrow Night. In 2001, he appeared in multiple projects, including Pootie Tang, Vanilla Sky, and Storytelling. In 2003, he was featured in the documentary End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones, and in 2005, he had a cameo in Bewitched.
The year 2006 saw O'Brien in two films: Queer Duck: The Movie and Pittsburgh. In 2008, he appeared in The Great Buck Howard. After a brief hiatus from film, he was featured in the 2011 documentary Conan O'Brien Can't Stop, which chronicled his nationwide comedy tour following his departure from NBC. In 2013, he lent his voice to the animated film Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 2 as the talk show host David Endocrine, and made cameos in Now You See Me, Clear History, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. In 2014, he appeared in the television movie Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda.
