Early Life and Education

Craig Delano Melvin was born on May 20, 1979, in Columbia, South Carolina, into a middle-class African American family. His father, Lawrence Melvin, worked as a banker, while his mother, Betty Melvin, was a fitness instructor. He is the middle of three sons and was raised in a supportive and loving environment.

Melvin attended local schools in Columbia before enrolling at Wofford College, a liberal arts institution in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor’s degree in journalism. During and following college, he held several internships and reporting jobs at local television stations, gradually building his on-air experience.

Career Beginnings and Rise at NBC

After graduation, Craig Melvin began his professional journalism career with WIS-TV in Columbia, starting as a news photographer and later serving as a reporter and weekend anchor. In 2003, he joined NBC, where he became a news anchor and correspondent. He worked for NBC affiliates for several years before transitioning to a national platform with MSNBC.

Melvin officially joined MSNBC in 2011 as a daytime anchor. His responsible and engaging coverage of major events helped him rise steadily within the network.
