She was born to a Catholic family of German and Swiss descent. Her full name is Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper has a younger brother named Fred and an older sister named Ellen. When she was five, her parents were divorced and she moved to Ozone Park in Queens. Lauper grew up listening to artists such as The Beatles and Judy Garland. She frequently died her hair various colors and by age twelve she was writing her own music and playing acoustic guitar. She attended Richmond Hill High School but was expelled.
