Cyndi Lauper is an American singer, songwriter, and actress who was born on June 22, 1953, in Astoria, New York City, New York, in the United States. She was born to a Catholic family of German and Swiss descent. Her full name is Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper has a younger brother named Fred and an older sister named Ellen. When she was five, her parents were divorced and she moved to Ozone Park in Queens. Lauper grew up listening to artists such as The Beatles and Judy Garland. She frequently died her hair various colors and by age twelve she was writing her own music and playing acoustic guitar. She attended Richmond Hill High School but was expelled.
Lauper moved out of her home when she was 17 to get away from her abusive stepfather. Lauper landed at Johnson State College in Vermont where she studied art. She went on to sing for several cover bands in the 1970s and has gone on to release nine studio albums of her own. Lauper has sold over 50 million albums throughout her career and has won awards at the Grammys, Emmys, and Tonys. She married actor David Thornton on November 24, 1991.
