Dehaan was born in the state of Pennsylvania, in the area known as Allentown. He has a father who works a computer programmer and the mother called Cynthia Boscia who is the executive for Knoll Furniture. He has older sister called Meghann and he had the childhood known as a supportive childhood. He went to Emmaus High School in the city of Emmaus and he was appearing in the community theater for 3 years. He switched to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts for the senior year for his high school and he was able to interact with the artists for the first time. He continued with the UNCSA for the undergraduate studies and finished in the year 2008. His parents have English, Italian, German and Dutch ancestry with some level of Scots-Irish and Welsh mix. His surname is from Dutch and it means The Rooster.

Dane Dehaan started his career when he was understudy of Haley Joel Osment in the revival movie of American Buffalo. In the year 2008, he made his television debut when he was the guest star for Law and Order, Special Victim Unit. In the year 2010, he was in the 2010 feature film Amigo of John Sayles. He was Jesse in a third Season for In Treatment and he played as Timbo in the fourth Season for True Blood.
