His mother was a freelance writer and father was an orthodontist. He completed his early education from Winston Churchill High school and UCLA. The T.V. series Beverly Hills which was premiered on fox in 1990 launched Darren’s career into the television world, he was credited with reviving the production house; the spelling TV empire. His reputation of writing screenplays about teenage characters served him in getting hired by fox to materialize the already envisioned idea of Beverly Hills. The show featured lives of a group of friends living in the upscale, navigating high school at West Beverly Hills High to college at the fictitious California University, and subsequently into the adult world. Melrose Place, a sequel of 90210 created by Darren was aired on Fox from July 8, 1992 to May 24, 1999, for seven seasons. The show revolved around the lives of a group of young adults living in an apartment complex called Melrose Place, the show was executively produced by Aaron Spelling for his company, Spelling Television. In the story Darren depicted his own experience of living in a motel style West Hollywood apartment building while working at a public relations firm by day and writing scripts at night. One of the leads in the soap opera, Daphne Zuniga was a former UCLA, roommate of Darren.

Tempted by CBS, Star left spelling empire in 1995 to create, write and executively produce “Central Park West” an ongoing primetime but failed to excite the audience. A revamp version of the same with a different title “CPW” was aired in June 1996 which met the same fate and was dropped. Darren surrendered to the decline in viewership (“Melrose” ended in 1999 and “90210” in 2000) and a new series by HBO, Sex and the City engulfed him which was based on a book by Candace Bushnell with a plot incorporating four women —three in their mid-thirties and one in her forties—who, despite their different natures and ever changing sex lives remain close and confide in each other. Darren received greater creative freedom with the cable network as a writer and sometime director which lead to “Sex and the city” having more explicit scenes and racy dialogues although rather than misusing the freedom to tantalize audience, Star created refreshing and realistic characters, more so than his previous creations. It spawned two feature films, Sex and the City(2008) and its sequel Sex and the City 2 (2010), and won many awards including 7 Primetime Emmy award in 2001 for outstanding comedy series, 8 golden globe awards and 3 screen actor star guild awards. Darren openly proclaimed himself a gay. He lives in LA, New York and has a net worth of 120 million USD.
