David Cross is an American actor, stand-up comedian, writer, and director best known for his role as Tobias Fünke in the critically acclaimed sitcom Arrested Development. He was born on April 4, 1964, in Roswell, Georgia.

Cross grew up in a financially struggling household. His father left the family when he was ten years old, and they were eventually evicted from their home. During this difficult period, Cross lived with friends and in motels. He attended Northside High School in Atlanta and moved to New York City the day after graduating.

Stand-Up Comedy and Boston Roots

Throughout the 1980s, Cross honed his stand-up comedy skills in Boston. In 1990, he became involved in the burgeoning alternative comedy scene at the Catch a Rising Star comedy club. He regularly performed alongside up-and-coming comedians, including Janeane Garofalo and Louis C.K.
