Denise Austin is an American author, columnist, and fitness instructor who had a long-running television program on ESPN2 entitled Getting Fit with Denise Austin. Denise Austin was born on February 3, 1957, in San Pedro, California. Denise began practicing gymnastics at the age of twelve and was admitted on an athletic scholarship to the University of Arizona. She later transferred to California State University where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in physical education with a minor in exercise physiology.
Since 1988, Denise Austin has produced and released nearly sixty workout videos that focus on everything from total body cardio to yoga. Her exercise programs often integrate a variety of methods including yoga, pilates, cross training, and aerobic exercise. In 2002, Denise was named as a member of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Denise served a second term on the council and helped to launch the food pyramid guidance system. Although she is known for helping others to exercise, Denise stresses that it is not just physical workouts that are important to living a healthy life. She believes that waking up each day with a positive attitude, remaining optimistic and spending time with friends and family does wonders to help keep you feeling young and enthusiastic.
In April 2007 a Washington, DC weekly newspaper called the Washington City Paper featured an article on Austin under their "Cheap Seats" column, where she was questioned about how some of her exercise shows on YouTube are inappropriate to some people. Austin said that she was totally unaware. She also reportedly said, with a giggle, that she was worried about it.
