When the couple filed for divorce in 2010, they talked to their kids first as they would be affected by all the media coverage. There were rumors that Eric left his wife of 12 years for a pregnant side girlfriend. The pregnant mistress was Marisela Alvarado, who happened to be a former Michigan State classmate of Eric's. With his girlfriend Marisela Alvarado, Eric named their baby girl Ava Maria Snow. DeShawn established herself as a children's book author in 2013, penning the Lil Shawnee book series for tween girls.

DeShawn also revamped her whole look during her devastating split and lost around 30 lbs. The difficult time after her divorce inspired her to shed some weight, and she amazed the world by losing 30 pounds. Going from a place where she thought everything was out of control to where things are much more calm has been very reassuring to her. She admits that the failure of her 12-year marriage was traumatic, but she has gotten her mind right.

DeShawn makes sure she keeps getting her message of positivity out there with frequent inspirational posts on her social media profiles. She focuses on empowering young women and helping give them the resources to do the tasks needed to succeed in life. She believes things happen for a reason, and nobody should let themselves be victims, keep on striving for better things, have better goals, and have faith in the world that these positive things will happen. DeShawn stays strong by focusing on charity work like Jarren's Island, which helps ADHD/autistic kids.

She has created several non-profit foundations to help kids, including the DeShawn Snow Foundation. Her fans continue to support her because they have seen how strong a woman she has become even after she went through the trauma of a messy divorce. She didn't deserve any of the bad things that happened to her, but she still was able to turn the negatives into a positive path in her life.
