Born on the 19th of November in the year 1936, the 79 year old talk show host came to life in Gibbon, Nebraska. However, the place of his birth was bit of conflict, before he admitted this on his own show while he was interviewing Carol Burnett. His parents were Erabel and Alva B. Cavett. They did the noble work of educating. Cavett has a mixed descent of French, Irish, Scottish and English ancestry. Other details about his ancestors include the facts that his grandmother from the paternal side migrated to Nebraska from Aachen and she settled along with his grandfather in Grand Island. Dick started his education with the Wasmer Elementary School and finished it from the Lincoln High School.
Cavett have always been on with the creative abilities as he did direct a live radio show, when he was in the eight standard. Another hidden ability of Dick is that he has been a good gymnast and he is gold medallist in his high school days. For higher studies he went to the Yale University and there he was keenly involved with art and dramatics. He was so indulged in to it that he even changed his majors subject to dramatics. He worked hard at it and while performing in Yale University he was able to meet many stars from the acting industry. After getting out from college Dick was in to various kinds of jobs starting from a typist to copier for the Time Magazine.
Dick married for the first time in the year 1964 to Carrie Nye. Carrie Nye, his first wife was his college mate. She was also into dramatics and performed beside Dick in a theatre in Williamstown located in Massachusetts. The marriage was not was not an ideal one, for they had multiple affairs outside their marriage. Interestingly, they didn’t had a divorce until death of Carrie separated them in the year 2006. Dick’s second marriage happened to Martha Rogers, a business author.
Initially Dick did petty roles in movies and TV shows. This included small roles in a Signal Corps feature film and Playhouse 90, another petty appearance on the Phil Silvers Show. Meanwhile, in order to supports himself he took on the job of a typist. The TV show ‘The Tonight Show’ is one of shows which brought him his much attained fame. On the show he has worked both as a writer and host. Another aspect of his career is stand-up comedy which he performed in the year 1964 at Greenwich Village. The year 1965 saw Dick giving voice to a commercial of Ballantine beer. He also did some narration work for the National Association of Broadcasters.
The Dick Cavett show revealed his hosting talents in full form. He was highly applauded for his style of conversation and hosting. The popularity of the show could be well estimated from the fact that starting from the 1968 to the year 2007, the show has been broadcasted by seven different channels, with ABC twice in the picture. Cavett’s column from the New York Times have been loved widely. As a matter of fact, they have been compiled in books for his fans. He is quite actively promoting these books and DVD compilation of his past shows.
