Early Life

Osmond was born in Ogden, Utah, on December 9, 1957, to Olive May and George Virl Osmond. He is the seventh child of the couple. His siblings are Alan, Jay, Jimmy, Merrill, Wayne, Marie, Tom, and Virl Osmond. Alan, Jay, Merrill, Wayne, and Donny were members of the well-known singing group The Osmonds (known as the Osmond Brothers before Donny joined them). Osmond and his siblings were raised as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah.

Career

In the early 1970s, Donny Osmond became a famous solo musician while still performing with his older brothers. He was a well-known "Cover Boy" pop artist for magazines like Tiger Beat and "16". To appeal to a more sophisticated audience, the Osmonds ditched their 1980s image crafted to appeal to young viewers. Donny was able to rekindle his status as a country music star, and with the help of entertainment and music expert Steven Machat, he returned to the US charts in 1989 with the No. 2 single on the Billboard Hot 100, "Soldier of Love", and the top twenty hit, "Sacred Emotion". He has since released various albums, including a Christmas CD, a selection of his favorite Broadway songs, and a collection of popular love songs, among others.

Personal Life

On May 8, 1978, in the Salt Lake Temple, Osmond tied the knot with Debra, a native of Billings, Montana. They have raised five sons together: Don, Jeremy, Brandon, Christopher, and Joshua. The Osmonds became grandparents for the first time in 2005 and now have twelve grandchildren. Osmond is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). He has reflected on his mission, saying that it would have been nice to have been able to serve a regular full-time mission, but that his career at the time meant that everyone, including his parents and the leaders of the church, thought that he could do a great deal of good in the world by continuing to be in the public eye, living an exemplary life, and sharing his beliefs in every way he could. On his website's letters and comments section, he shares his beliefs with the public. Following Proposition 8 in California in 2008, Osmond expressed his opposition to same-sex marriage, though he does not condemn homosexuality. He believes that gays should be permitted into the LDS Church if they remain celibate.
