Doris Day is an American actress and singer who recorded more than six hundred and fifty songs from 1947 to 1967 for which she received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Doris Day became a film star and in 1989 she was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement. Doris Day was born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff on April 3, 1922, in Cincinnati, Ohio; her father was a music teacher and her mother was a housewife. One of Doris Day’s first professional appearances was at a local restaurant known as Charlie Yee’s Shanghai Inn; her first hit recording, Sentimental Journey, was released in 1945. Her popularity as a radio performer led her to her movie career and she was given a role in Romance on the High Seas in 1948.

Her 1951 film, I’ll See You in My Dreams, broke box-office records that had stood for more than twenty years and was her most commercially successful film for Warner Brothers. Doris Day is known for working with Alfred Hitchcock, James Stewart, Cary Grant, Bob Hope, Rock Hudson, Tony Randall, and many others; she was known for her work in romantic comedies.  Doris Day has been married four times, her last marriage ended in 1982, and currently lives in Carmel-by-the-Sea.
