Douglas Gene Stanhope, known professionally as Doug Stanhope, was born on March 25, 1967, in Worcester, Massachusetts. He is an American stand-up comedian known for his provocative and unfiltered style. In addition to performing comedy, he is also recognized for his work as an author and podcast host.
Stanhope began his stand-up career in 1990, developing a distinct voice characterized by black comedy, satire, insult comedy, and political commentary. His material often delves into controversial topics such as human sexuality, libertarianism, and societal norms, earning him a reputation for being both cynical and candid. His libertarian political stance frequently shapes the themes of his performances.

That same year, he formed a comedy group called The Unbookables, which included comedians James Inman, Andy Andrist, and others. The group was known for touring alternative clubs and fringe venues.
Stanhope appears in the 2005 documentary The Aristocrats, in which numerous comedians interpret the infamous adult joke. In 2007, he filmed two stand-up specials: one at Gotham Comedy Club in New York City, and another at The Caves in Edinburgh for the UK's Channel 4. In 2009, The Guardian ranked one of his live shows at number five on its list of the Top 20 Live Shows of the year.
His seventh comedy album, From Across the Street, was released on November 24, 2009. In 2010, he contributed a series of satirical vignettes to Charlie Brooker’s show Newswipe. He later signed with Roadrunner Records when they expanded into releasing comedy albums.
