Douglas Emhoff is an American lawyer who was born in 1964 in New York where he grew up with his sister. Little information is available about Emhoff's early years but it is known that he graduated from California State University in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and Media Studies. Emhoff went on to attend the University of Southern California where he obtained a Juris Doctorate degree in 1990. He went on to work as an associate for Bingham McCutchen LLP from 1993 to 1995. Emhoff then moved to Pillsbury partner Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP before going on to become a partner at Belin Rawlings & Badal law firm in 1998.
Emhoff met accomplished attorney and politician Kamala Harris and the two hit it off. They started a relationship together after their first date and a year later he proposed to Harris with a platinum and diamond engagement ring in her apartment. The pair were married on August 22, 2014, in Santa Barbara, California. Emhoff tries to maintain a degree of privacy despite his wife's high profile position as the junior United States Senator from California. Emhoff has two children from a previous marriage, a boy named Cole and a girl named Ella.
