Sher was born on December 26, 1991, in Los Angeles, California, to a Jewish family. She was raised by her single mother, who worked as a schoolteacher. Sher has two siblings—an older brother and a younger brother—and is also a pet lover with three dogs. Her early interest in acting began at the age of eight when she participated in school plays and performed in elementary school musical programs.

Breakthrough Role in "The Middle"

While Sher appeared in various television series early in her career, many of those shows were either canceled or her roles were short-lived. Her breakthrough came with the ABC sitcom The Middle, in which she portrayed Susan "Sue" Heck, a lovable and optimistic teenager known for her perseverance and upbeat personality. The role earned her critical acclaim, including a Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

In addition to The Middle, Sher had a recurring role as Gretchen in the acclaimed comedy-drama series Weeds, where she played the middle school love interest of Shane Botwin, portrayed by Alexander Gould. She also played Carrie Fenton in the ABC comedy series Sons & Daughters, which ran for just 11 episodes before being canceled. Outside of television, she appeared in a short film titled Stuck and has completed numerous commercials, including voice-over work.
