Benjamin Joseph Manaly Novak was born on July 31, 1979, in Newton, Massachusetts, to Linda and William Novak. He is Jewish by heritage. His father, William Novak, is a noted author and ghostwriter, known for co-writing memoirs such as those of Lee Iacocca and Nancy Reagan. B.J. Novak is the eldest of three brothers.
He attended the Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston and later graduated from Newton South High School. Novak pursued higher education at Harvard University, majoring in English and Spanish. At Harvard, he became actively involved in campus humor and drama, serving as a member of both the Harvard Lampoon and the Hasty Pudding Club. He also created and performed in a campus stage show titled The B.J. Show, showcasing his early flair for comedy and performance.
After graduating in 2001, Novak moved to Los Angeles to pursue opportunities in comedy and acting. Shortly thereafter, on October 10, 2001, he gave his first stand-up performance at the Hollywood Youth Hostel. His sharp comedic style quickly gained attention, and in 2003, he was named one of Variety’s "Ten Comedians to Watch."
Novak initially began his television career as a writer for the short-lived sitcom Raising Dad. His on-screen debut came in 2003 on MTV’s hit series Punk’d, where he garnered attention for playing pranks on celebrities. Alongside television, he continued performing stand-up at various comedy clubs, building his reputation in the comedy scene.
Novak achieved wide recognition with his role as Ryan Howard on the acclaimed NBC comedy series The Office, developed by Greg Daniels. In addition to acting, Novak served as a writer and producer on the show. He was a part of the series from its debut in 2005 through its eighth season and made guest appearances thereafter. His contributions to the show earned him multiple nominations and helped define his career in television writing and acting.
Beyond television, Novak has appeared in several notable films. These include playing roles in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, which won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. He also appeared in The Smurfs, the biographical drama Saving Mr. Banks (2013), and the superhero film The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014).
In addition to acting, Novak has established himself as a writer. He authored the story collection One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories, which was well received by critics, and the bestselling children’s book The Book with No Pictures, which became popular for its humorous and engaging format.
Novak is widely known for his personal and professional association with fellow The Office star Mindy Kaling. Although neither has publicly confirmed a long-term romantic relationship, their close friendship and intermittent dating have drawn public interest, in part because of their on-screen dynamic as Ryan and Kelly in the series.
As of today, B.J. Novak has built a multifaceted career spanning writing, acting, and producing. With an estimated net worth of $8 million, he continues to be a respected figure in the entertainment industry. His dedication to comedy, television writing, and literature has earned him critical acclaim and a loyal audience.
