Broderick Stephen Harvey was born on January 17, 1957, in Welch, West Virginia, to Jesse Harvey and Eloise Harvey. He spent the majority of his childhood in Cleveland, Ohio, along with his four siblings. He graduated from Glenville High School in Cleveland in 1974, after which his family returned to West Virginia. For his higher education, Harvey attended both Kent State University and West Virginia University. Of African-American descent, Harvey is known for his charismatic personality and distinctive appearance.
Before discovering his passion for comedy, Harvey held a variety of jobs. These included working as an insurance salesman, mail carrier, and even trying his hand at amateur boxing.
Harvey’s journey into comedy began in 1985 when he performed stand-up for the first time at the Hilarities Comedy Club. His decision to pursue comedy came with challenges; during his early years, he struggled financially and was homeless for a time. A major turning point occurred in 1990 when Harvey became a finalist in the Second Annual Johnnie Walker National Comedy Search. This visibility led to his opportunity to host the famed variety show, It’s Showtime at the Apollo.
In 1994, Harvey starred in the sitcom Me and the Boys, followed by his role as the lead in The Steve Harvey Show, which aired on The WB Network from 1996 to 2002. His popularity grew, and in 1997 he joined fellow comedians Cedric the Entertainer, D.L. Hughley, and Bernie Mac in the comedy tour The Kings of Comedy. The tour’s success led to a Spike Lee-directed film adaptation, The Original Kings of Comedy, released in 2000.
In 2010, Harvey began hosting the long-running game show Family Feud, and later Celebrity Family Feud. His engaging presence revitalized the show and helped broaden its audience. In addition to his television work, Harvey also launched a successful radio program, The Steve Harvey Morning Show, further establishing his influence in the media landscape.
Harvey has hosted numerous awards and television programs, including the Essence Awards (2002 and 2003), Steve Harvey’s Big Time Challenge (2003–2005), BET Comedy Awards (2004 and 2005), and the NAACP Image Awards in 2013. He also guest-hosted shows like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire in 2010, Praise the Lord in 2012, and served as host of Little Big Shots in 2016.
In 2015, Harvey made headlines during the Miss Universe pageant after mistakenly announcing the first runner-up as the winner. He corrected the error a few minutes later and publicly apologized, taking full responsibility for the mistake.
In addition to his work in television and radio, Harvey has appeared in several movies. His film credits include The Fighting Temptations (2003), Love Don’t Cost a Thing (2003), and Think Like a Man (2012), which was based on one of his best-selling relationship books.
Harvey married Marcia Harvey in 1980, and the couple had twin daughters, Karli and Brandi, born in 1982, and a son, Broderick Steven Jr. After their divorce, he married Mary Shackelford, with whom he has another son, Wynton. Following their divorce, Harvey married Marjorie Bridges in 2007. Together, they have blended their families and continue to share a strong public partnership.
According to published reports, Steve Harvey’s estimated net worth is approximately $200 million, a figure that reflects his extensive work across comedy, television, radio, and business ventures.
