During an episode of his sister’s Facebook show called Red Table Talk, Caleeb and Jada spoke about their troubled and complicated relationship with their father, Robsol Pinkett, Jr. Jada and Caleeb have the same father but have different mothers. Their dad was a shared source of pain throughout their lives and it was rough for them to grow up in that environment.
When explaining the relationship, Jada said. “We had a lot of resentment. We had that feeling like we had to be responsible for him, but he never had to be responsible for us and that was a hard pill for me to swallow.
Both siblings felt they eventually had to let go of the pain and anger they held toward their father. He had a nasty battle with drug addiction and died of an overdose in 2010. Jada said his death haunted her for years because they never got to make things right. She fought back tears when she said, “The most difficult part of him dying like that is because he and I had had a horrendous fight when I found out that he relapsed. I was like, ‘I don’t owe you nothing.’ You didn’t do shit for me, you didn’t do shift for Caleeb. I don’t owe you nothing.’
It was one of the last conversations she ever had with her father and she felt guilty because she thought it might have pushed him over the edge. Caleeb also had a similar talk with their father when he found out that his father had gone back to drugs, “I was furious. And he told me, that’s what the disease is. This is who I am.”
The tragedy of their father’s death bonded the siblings and they found solace in celebrating the positive parts of their father’s life. Jada said Caleeb became a man when their father died, “He had to go identify the body, he had to take care of the funeral arrangements and to have that happen and I didn’t have to take care of it? He had it. The way Caleeb handled it was with so much strength and so much grace, and that’s when he really grew up to me in that moment. To have my little brother be able to step up for me, was an amazing moment.”
