Willow Camille Reign Smith was born on October 31, 2000, in Los Angeles, California. She attended New Village Leadership Academy in Calabasas, followed by Sierra Canyon School in Chatsworth, California. Raised in a family immersed in the entertainment industry, she comes from a lineage of actors and musicians, including her parents, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, and her brother, Jaden Smith.

Despite growing up in a public spotlight with strong family ties to the entertainment business, Willow has been candid about her personal challenges. In a 2018 episode of Red Table Talk with her mother and grandmother, she revealed that she struggled with self-harm during a difficult period in her early teenage years, shortly after the release of her debut single "Whip My Hair."

Following her breakout, she released additional singles including "21st Century Girl," which she debuted on The Oprah Winfrey Show in February 2011. Although less commercially successful, the track showcased her evolving sound. In October 2011, she collaborated with Nicki Minaj on "Fireball." Despite the high-profile partnership, the single peaked modestly at No. 121 on the Billboard R&B chart.
