Catherine O'Hara is an acclaimed Canadian actress and writer, internationally recognized for her performances in iconic films such as Home Alone and Beetlejuice.
Catherine Anne O'Hara was born on March 4, 1954, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She is the sixth of seven children in a large Irish-Canadian family. Her younger sister, Mary Margaret O'Hara, is a singer, songwriter, and occasional actress, best known for her critically acclaimed 1988 album Miss America.
O’Hara attended Burnhamthorpe Collegiate Institute in Toronto, where she first connected with fellow comedian Robin Duke. Their friendship would later grow into professional collaboration during their careers in comedy.
O'Hara began her career in 1974 by joining the Second City comedy troupe in Toronto, an improvisational group known for launching many successful comedic careers. She initially worked as an understudy for fellow comedian Gilda Radner. After Radner was recruited by Lorne Michaels to join Saturday Night Live, O'Hara’s prominence within Second City grew significantly.
Her television debut came with the Canadian sitcom Coming Up Rosie (1975–1977). She went on to appear in various supporting roles before earning her first major film role in Double Negative (1980). This helped open doors to more prominent projects, including Martin Scorsese’s After Hours (1985), Nora Ephron’s Heartburn (1986), Beetlejuice (1988), Dick Tracy (1990), and the beloved Christmas classics Home Alone (1990) and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992).
Throughout the 1990s, O’Hara diversified her portfolio by taking on both live-action and voice roles. She made appearances on Saturday Night Live (1991) and The Larry Sanders Show (1992), and she lent her voice to animated films such as Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993). She also guest-starred in Tales from the Crypt in 1994.
In the 2000s, O’Hara continued her television work with roles in award-winning HBO series such as Six Feet Under (2003–2005) and Curb Your Enthusiasm (2009). She remained a popular choice for both comedic and dramatic roles.
O’Hara experienced a significant career resurgence with her role as Moira Rose in the hit Canadian series Schitt’s Creek (2015–2020), created by Eugene Levy and Dan Levy. Her portrayal of the eccentric former soap opera star earned widespread acclaim and led to multiple award nominations. Notably, she was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series at the 2019 Primetime Emmy Awards, later winning the award in 2020.
Her recent work also includes appearances in Modern Family (2015), voicing characters in the animated series Skylanders Academy (2016), and a recurring role in Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (2017–2019).
Catherine O’Hara married American production designer and director Bo Welch in 1992. They met on the set of Beetlejuice in 1988, where Welch served as the film’s production designer. Together, they have two sons, Matthew and Luke, and maintain a private family life.
