Heather Cox was born on June 3, 1970, in Jonesville, North Carolina, United States. Her birth name is Heather Schoeny Cox. She is a renowned American sportscaster known for her extensive coverage of collegiate and professional sports.
Cox was an accomplished volleyball player. In 1987, she joined the United States National Volleyball Team and played for eight years. During her collegiate years, she attended the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, where she earned a degree in communications in 1992.
Cox received a volleyball scholarship to the University of the Pacific in 1988. As captain of the women’s volleyball team, she led the team to national prominence. The team consistently ranked high in Division I from 1988 to 1991. Notably, in 1990, she led her team to the Final Four in the NCAA Championship, where they finished in fourth place. That same year, Cox competed in the United States Olympic Festival, further showcasing her volleyball credentials.
Additionally, she served as captain of the Sacramento Stars, a team within the National Volleyball Association, underscoring her leadership in the sport.
Cox began her broadcasting career as a basketball analyst for Fox Sports Net. She also reported and analyzed professional volleyball and basketball, as well as college football. Shortly after, she joined ESPN, contributing to their coverage of NCAA basketball and volleyball championships. She also worked with CBS Sports, covering the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, and contributed as an analyst for women’s college basketball. Her diverse portfolio included coverage of motorsports, such as auto racing and motocross events.
In 1999, Cox served as a reporter for the television magazine show Running with the Pac. In 2000, she began writing as a columnist for the Pac-10 Conference, where she produced a weekly national volleyball column. Her written contributions provided insight into collegiate volleyball and demonstrated her in-depth knowledge of the sport.
By 1995, Cox was working for both ABC Sports and ESPN. For ESPN, she reported on the NBA, NCAA basketball, college football, and the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). While at ABC Sports, she covered events including NCAA basketball, NBA games, professional volleyball, and college football. She became a familiar face as a sideline reporter for ABC’s Saturday Night College Football Game of the Week, taking over from Erin Andrews.
Between 1998 and 2001, she worked with Turner Sports, covering the Goodwill Games as both an analyst and reporter. In 2002, Cox joined Oxygen Media Network, where she served as a WNBA analyst and also reported on that year's NBA Playoffs.
Her collaboration with NBC Sports began in 2003, where she covered the Association of Volleyball Professionals. She went on to cover the beach volleyball events at the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Summer Olympics, providing insightful reporting and analysis as part of NBC’s Olympic coverage.
