Iain Lee is an English stand-up comedian, presenter, broadcaster, and writer, best known for his offbeat, conversational radio style. He was born on June 9, 1973, in Slough, then part of Buckinghamshire, England. He attended Herschel Grammar School in Slough, which is now located in the ceremonial county of Berkshire following boundary changes.
Lee began his career performing stand-up comedy at various venues in London before transitioning to television. He gained national attention as a co-presenter of Channel 4's satirical news and comedy program, The 11 O’Clock Show. Alongside Mackenzie Crook and Daisy Donovan, Lee hosted the show, which also featured rising comedic talents such as Ricky Gervais and Sacha Baron Cohen, performing as his character Ali G.
Following his stint on The 11 O’Clock Show, Lee co-presented the Channel 4 breakfast program RI:SE along with Kate Lawler. Although RI:SE struggled in ratings and was eventually canceled, his time on the show broadened his exposure in UK mainstream media.
Iain Lee became a prominent figure in talk radio, initially spending three years at LBC, where he hosted phone-in and discussion-based programming. He later moved to Absolute Radio, where he fronted Iain Lee’s 2 Hour Long Late Night Radio Show. He is perhaps most widely recognized for hosting The Late Night Alternative, a weeknight talk show that gained a loyal following for its free-form style and open conversations on mental health, popular culture, and current events.
The Late Night Alternative aired weekday evenings and was notable for providing a welcoming space for candid discussions, often featuring unusual stories and calls from listeners seeking both entertainment and empathy.
In addition to his radio and TV hosting duties, Iain Lee has participated in several popular British television game shows. He has won episodes of The Weakest Link, Mastermind, and Pointless Celebrities, demonstrating wide-ranging trivia knowledge and a dry wit that resonated with audiences.
One of the defining moments of Lee’s radio career occurred in December 2018, when he helped save the life of a suicidal listener who had called into his show. The caller had taken an overdose and was lying on the street in Plymouth when he reached out to Lee. By keeping the man on the line for over 30 minutes, Iain assisted emergency services in locating him, ultimately helping to save his life. The act was widely praised and brought attention to the power of live broadcasting in mental health support.
