In 2005 Dean had just come off of one of the most prolific hurricane seasons ever. She had been working long hours reporting on the hurricanes Dennis, Emily, Katrina, Rita and Wilma and decided to take a much needed vacation. The very first day of her vacation Dean woke up with numbness in her legs and feet and was forced to visit a doctor. The doctor diagnosed Janice with MS which left her worrying about her life and career. Janice was able to find a caring doctor that shared stories of other’s perseverance through the disease and gave her encouragement. Janice was also able to connect with others that were living with MS and fully thriving,
Being diagnosed with MS gave Janice a new outlook on her body. As a teen, Janice was often teased about her curvy figure and this behavior continued in the television studio. After her diagnosis Janice began to be more appreciative of her body and to see it less through the eyes of someone with body-image issues.
So the next time someone criticized her body; this time on the social media platform Facebook, Janice responded with the following message: “I’m sorry if you don’t like my legs. I’m grateful I have them to walk with. You’re right. I don’t look like the typical person on TV, and I’m proud to be a size 10. Imagine that! You can always turn off the channel if you’re offended by my huge legs.
Later, Janice tweeted out the following: “As someone who was diagnosed with MS over a decade ago, I know my legs could give out on me at any time. So I am grateful for my big, strong legs that keep me standing tall, help me walk, dance, kick and make snow angels. I am blessed.”
We are blessed too Janice. Blessed by your ability to prioritize what is important in life and share that with others in order to inspire them to be confident and grateful for each and every day. We are blessed to learn through you Janice, that it is wrong to shame and bully others. Dean said in a statement: “I’ve always been conscious about what body part I’d like to change, but I’m comfortable in that I know what I’m good at. I want to say to young girls ‘it’s OK to be yourself, to show who you are.’”
