John Roberts is a Canadian-American television journalist who currently serves as the co-anchor of America Reports on the Fox News Channel. From 2017 to 2021, Roberts served as Fox News' Chief White House Correspondent, covering Donald Trump's administration. John Roberts was born on November 15, 1956, in Toronto, Ontario. He was primarily raised in Mississauga; he attended Erindale Secondary School and then Lorne Park Secondary School. He graduated in 1978 from the University of Toronto Mississauga. John Roberts worked at a local radio station during his college years, the CFRE–FM station in Mississauga.
John Roberts' first marriage to his ex-wife, Michele, was not successful and ended in 2008. On April 25, 2010, Roberts announced his engagement to Kyra Phillips, the CNN television anchor whom he later married. The couple had twin children on March 15, 2011, and they named them Sage Ann and Kellan Clay. In August 2016, he faced a sexual harassment lawsuit while working at Fox News, as Andrea Tantaros claimed that Roberts, Bill O'Reilly, and Scott Brown had sexually harassed her.
In 1975, John Roberts got his first job as a reporter and news anchor for CFOS in Owen Sound, Ontario. His next job was for CHYM, where he worked as a disc jockey and newsman. After that, in 1977, John worked for CJBK, a radio station in London, Ontario. He then moved back to Toronto to work in the Top-40 powerhouse CHUM, and he further worked as a DJ in the evening shows. In 1979, John stopped working on the radio to work as an entertainment reporter and host with Jeanne Beker. They teamed up at a news magazine focused on music called "The NewMusic," which was a pioneer in its genre and opened the way for MTV. He kept working on this program on CITY-TV until 1985. While working as a video jockey at CITY-TV, Roberts became popularly known as J.D. Roberts amongst his music fans. Roberts worked as an anchor for multiple shows, including the TV music show "Toronto Rocks" on MuchMusic's TV music channel. He hosted many programs, including a heavy metal music video show called "The Power Hour." In 1987, Roberts left MuchMusic and began working as an anchor for the TV program on CITY-TV named CityPulse, followed by CityPulse Tonight. He then worked as a reporter for WCIX, a TV channel owned by CBS and based in Miami, Florida. In 1990, Roberts returned to Canada to co-host the national CTV morning show Canada AM, with Deborah McGregor and later Pamela Wallin. In 1992, Roberts started working for CBS News in New York, first anchoring the CBS Morning News with co-anchor Meredith Vieira, and later substituting for anchor Harry Smith on CBS This Morning.
Between 1994 and 1995, Roberts anchored the daily newscasts at 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. for CBS's flagship station in New York. His next role was to anchor "CBS Sunday Evening," and he spent the next 11 years of his career in that role. In 1999, Roberts anchored the "CBS Saturday Evening News" and became the chief correspondent from the White House for CBS. He continued this role until 2006. In 2003, Roberts was embedded with the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion of the U.S. Marines during the initial invasion of Iraq. In February 2006, Roberts left CBS to join the CNN network. He reported from war zones such as the Israel/Hezbollah war front lines and was also embedded with an Israeli infantry unit. From 2007 to 2010, Roberts was the co-anchor of the CNN morning program "American Morning." He left the program to stay closer to his fiancée, Kyra Phillips, another anchor for CNN in Atlanta. In January 2011, Roberts started working for Fox News as a national correspondent based in Atlanta and as the Chief White House Correspondent.
Roberts has provided the public with exceptional coverage and breaking news such as the Presidential debates, Hurricane Irene, and the Republican National Convention. John has traveled to many international destinations to cover the news. He traveled to Yugoslavia during the NATO Bombing in 2005, and he was also present to capture the earthquake that occurred in Turkey. He has interviewed and met many interesting personalities, including former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
