Kevin David Sorbo is an actor from the United States. He starred in two television shows, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Andromeda, as Hercules and Captain Dylan Hunt, respectively. Sorbo is well recognized for his roles in God's Not Dead and Let There Be Light both Christian drama films.
Kevin Sorbo was born on September 24, 1958, in Mound, Minnesota, where he attended the Mound Westonka High School. Ardis, a nurse, and Lynn Sorbo, a junior high school mathematics and biology teacher. His family raised him in a Lutheran household. After graduating from high school, Sorbo attended Minnesota State University Moorhead, where he completed his studies in two different majors, marketing and advertising.
To pay his tuition fees, Sorbo started working in the mid-1980s as a print and television advertising model. He appeared in over 150 commercials by 1993.
Sorbo married Sam Jenkins on January 5, 1998. Sam Jenkins was also an actress, and the two met in 1997 when she had a guest role on Hercules. The couple gave birth to three children, Braedon Cooper (born 2001), Shane Haaken (born 2004), and Octavia Flynn (born 2005).
Kevin Sorbo started receiving his first T.V. roles when he made guest appearances on shows like "1st & Ten", "Murder She Wrote," and "The Commish." He tried out for some high-profile roles, but those roles went to Dean Cain for Superman in "Superman in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures" and David Duchovny for Agent Mulder in "X-Files." Sorbo appeared in a top-rated series of international T.V. ads for the bourbon whiskey "Jim Beam" that started to raise his fame.
In 1994, Sorbo got the leading role of the Ancient Greek hero Hercules in the television film "Hercules and the Amazon Women," which was the first of a series of television films which aired during that same year, with the fifth and final film "Hercules in the Maze of the Minotaur" airing in November 1994. The success of these films led him to quickly get the role of Hercules in the television series "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys," which ran for six seasons and 111 episodes between January 1995 and November 1999. The series brought international popularity to Sorbo, and he also got the chance to direct two episodes and co-write one episode.
The success of this show spawned the popular spin-off series "Xena: Warrior Princess," in which Sorbo also guest-starred in two episodes. In 1998, he voiced Hercules in the spin-off direct-to-video animated film "Hercules and Xena – The Animated Movie: The Battle for Mount Olympus."
During the years in which Sorbo was playing the role of Hercules, he got the chance to play his first leading film role in "Kull the Conqueror" (1997). When the T.V. series Hercules came to an end, Sorbo started playing in the starring part of Captain Dylan Hunt in the sci-fi drama series "Andromeda" (2000/2005). In 2006, he got a role in the final season of "The O.C.," and he guest-starred in the popular sitcom "Two and a Half Men."

In 2007, he starred in "Walking Tall: The Payback," a sequel of the 2004 film "Walking Tall" One year after that, he played in the next chapter of this saga, "Walking Tall: Lone Justice." He also starred in the movie "Last Chance Café" in the Hallmark Channel film "Avenging Angel," co-starring his real-life wife, Sam Jenkins. He appeared in the 2008 spoof film "Meet the Spartans," which was a box office success, and, after that, he starred in the sci-fi vampire film "Tales of an Ancient Empire."
In 2012, Sorbo served as Executive Producer and star of the movie "Abel's Field," He appeared in an episode of "Celebrity Ghost Stories." In 2014, Sorbo co-starred in "God's Not Dead," a Christian film in which he portrayed the controversial role of an atheist college professor. In 2017, Sorbo played the ill-fated King Lar Gand of Daxam on the C.W. series "Supergirl." He also directed and played a role in the movie "Let There Be Light."
Kevin Sorbo's career also includes voice-over work with Breathe Bible and in many videogames like "The Conduit" (2009) and "Skylanders: Imaginators" (2016).
In 2001, Sorbo participated in the Celebrity Edition of the top-rated T.V. Game Show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." On that episode, he won $32,000 after giving Regis Philbin the wrong answer at the $125,000 question for his charity A World Fit For Kids.
Sorbo is a Christian, and he attends a nondenominational church. Sorbo believes that his religious views have caused Hollywood to limit his career. He said, "There's negativity towards Christians in Hollywood. And a negativity towards people who believe in God."
In late 1997, Sorbo had severe health problems while he was on a publicity tour for "Kull the Conqueror" and still playing in Hercules between the 4th and the 5th seasons. He got an aneurysm in his shoulder, which caused four strokes. As a result, his health became impaired; Sorbo lost his strength and weakened for several years. He did not reveal his condition to the public while he was recovering.
This health issue brought the producers of Hercules to reduce Sorbo's schedule and introduce more guest stars during the recording of the 5th and 6th series in 1998 and 1999. The strokes left Sorbo with a permanent 10 percent vision loss, impaired balance, and migraines. In his 2011 autobiography "True Strength," Sorbo revealed all the details of his injury, and he gave credit to his wife Sam Jenkins for her massive role in helping him recover.
