Marin Hinkle was born in 1966 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. She is the daughter of Margaret Polga Hinkle, a Justice of the Superior Court of Massachusetts, and Rodney Hinkle, a college dean and teacher. Her parents met while her father was serving in the Peace Corps. When Marin was four months old, the family relocated to Boston, Massachusetts. She has one younger brother, Mark, who was born two years later.
Hinkle graduated from Newton South High School and later pursued acting at New York University, where she attended the Tisch School of the Arts.
