Mark Alan Lowry, widely known as Mark Lowry, is a multifaceted American entertainer born on June 24, 1958, in Houston, Texas. He is the son of Beverly Lowry and Charles Lowry, an attorney. Mark Lowry is best known as a Christian singer, comedian, and songwriter. With a dynamic stage presence, Lowry has made significant contributions to gospel music, notably through his tenure with the Gaither Vocal Band and as the co-writer of the cherished Christmas song “Mary, Did You Know?” Known for his quick wit and energetic personality, Lowry once described himself as the “Poster Boy for Hyperactivity.”
Mark Lowry has never married and does not have children. However, he maintains a close relationship with his extended family, which includes siblings, three nephews, and three nieces.
Lowry attended Liberty Baptist College, now known as Liberty University. During his time there, he began his musical journey as a singer with an evangelistic team formed by David Musselman and Charles Hughes. This early exposure to ministry and performance laid the groundwork for his future career in Christian music and comedy.
In 1978, Lowry was seriously injured in a car accident while touring with the evangelistic team. The incident required a long period of recovery and had a significant impact on his life, both personally and professionally.
Lowry’s entry into comedy was somewhat spontaneous. During a live concert, an extended pause caused by a delay in changing the soundtrack gave him the opportunity to engage the audience with impromptu monologues. His humorous storytelling elicited laughter and positive responses, prompting a new avenue in his career.
His comedy took center stage in a series of successful video releases. These include his debut comedy video Mark Lowry: My First Comedy Video (1988), Mark Lowry: The Last Word (1992), and Mark Lowry: Mouth in Motion (1993), which won a Dove Award. He followed these with Mark Lowry: Remotely Controlled (1995), and subsequent DVDs released in 2000 and 2005.
One of Mark Lowry’s most enduring contributions to Christian music is the song “Mary, Did You Know?” He wrote the lyrics in 1984 as part of a script for a church Christmas play. The lyrics were a series of contemplative questions directed toward Mary, the mother of Jesus. It wasn’t until 1991 that musician Buddy Greene composed the music for the lyrics, transforming the script into a poignant song. “Mary, Did You Know?” has since been recorded by more than thirty artists, including Michael Crawford, Clay Aiken, and CeeLo Green, gaining international recognition as a modern Christmas classic.
Lowry joined the Gaither Vocal Band in 1988 at the invitation of Bill Gaither. As a baritone singer, he filled the vocal range between bass and tenor. He remained with the group until 2001, during which time he became known not only for his voice but also for his comedic stage antics. His onstage chemistry with Bill Gaither, who played the straight man to Lowry’s humor, was a highlight of their concerts and television appearances.
After leaving the group in 2001 to focus on his solo career, Lowry released several albums independently. He rejoined the Gaither Vocal Band in 2009 while continuing to pursue solo work, and finally departed again in 2013 alongside vocalist Michael English.
Lowry has remained active in performance, appearing on stages across the United States. In addition to live shows, he has expanded into digital media. He hosts a variety of podcasts, including a weekly podcast titled “Saturday with Mark and Tony” co-hosted with well-known Christian speaker Tony Campolo. Together, the duo also co-host the television program “Red Letter Christians,” a show focusing on social justice and Christian values.
Through his work in music, comedy, and commentary, Mark Lowry has carved out a unique space in contemporary Christian culture, continuing to engage audiences with authenticity, humor, and faith-driven content.
