Matt Gutman was born in 1977 in Westfield, New Jersey, to parents Sharon and Paul Gutman. He has an older sister named Rachel. Gutman attended Williams College, graduating in 1999.
Before joining ABC News, Gutman spent over seven years as a Jerusalem-based reporter, covering major conflicts in the Middle East. He began reporting from the region shortly after the outbreak of the Iraq War in 2003. He was among the first journalists to report from Fallujah on the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) against U.S. troops. Gutman also covered the capture of Saddam Hussein in 2003, reporting for several international news outlets.
Between 2000 and 2001, Gutman worked as a freelance journalist across Africa and Latin America. His first published article appeared in the Buenos Aires Herald in 2000.
Gutman joined ABC News in 2008, initially serving as a correspondent for ABC News Radio based in Miami. During his early years with the network, he covered major events such as the 2008 U.S. presidential election, the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He also anchored ABC’s coverage of several space shuttle launches.
In 2009, Gutman began appearing regularly on ABC News television programs. Based in Miami, he reported for shows such as Nightline, Good Morning America, World News with Diane Sawyer, and 20/20. In 2014, he became the host of the nationally broadcast program Sea Rescue, succeeding Sam Champion.
One of Gutman's most recognized contributions was his reporting on the 2012 shooting of Trayvon Martin. His team produced a series of exclusive reports that examined George Zimmerman’s role in the incident and the subsequent police investigation in Sanford, Florida. The coverage, titled Shooting in Sanford: The Death of Trayvon Martin, received an award from the National Association of Black Journalists.
Gutman was also instrumental in ABC's coverage of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. His reporting highlighted both the efforts made by BP to contain the disaster and the resulting environmental and economic impact across the Gulf Coast.
Despite early and unfounded rumors regarding his personal life, Matt Gutman is married and has two children—a son and a daughter. He prefers to keep details about his family private, and limited public information is available regarding his wife or personal finances.
