Michael Owen Rosenbaum is an American actor, comedian, writer, producer, and director. He was born on July 11, 1972, in Oceanside, New York, and raised in Newburgh, Indiana. His parents are Julie, a published author and former actress known for her book Journey of a Lifetime, and Mark Rosenbaum, who worked in the pharmaceutical industry. Michael has five siblings: two brothers, Eric and Adam, and three sisters, including Laurie. He also has two stepsisters, Ava and Lia, from his father’s second marriage.
Following his parents’ divorce, Julie remarried Gordon Engelhardt, a reporter, and Mark later married Alexis Peregrino, a performer, with whom he had two daughters. Despite the changes in his family dynamic, Rosenbaum maintained close relationships with his siblings and stepfamily members.
Michael Rosenbaum attended Castle High School in Indiana before enrolling at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. There, he earned a degree in theatre arts and became a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. His passion for acting led him to move to New York City immediately after graduation to pursue a professional career in entertainment. Rosenbaum is Jewish and has spoken about feeling more connected to his faith while living in New York than he had in his hometown.
Rosenbaum gained early recognition for his performance in the comedy film Sorority Boys, but his most iconic role came as Lex Luthor in the television series Smallville. His portrayal of the complex villain earned him a Saturn Award and a place in TV Guide’s "60 Nastiest Villains of All Time." He originally left the series in 2008 but returned in the final season in 2011 to give closure to his character's arc.
In addition to live-action roles, Rosenbaum became a prominent voice actor, known especially for voicing the Flash (Wally West) in the DC Animated Universe, including Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. He also provided voices for other characters such as Ghoul in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker and Deadshot, appropriately using vocal impersonations, including that of Kevin Spacey, when requested.
Rosenbaum’s professional journey began when MTV Networks intern Vincent Letizia noticed a black-and-white headshot Rosenbaum submitted during a casting call for a pilot called Talk Girl. Impressed by his performance, Letizia helped create a new pilot titled The Michael Rosenbaum Project, later renamed The Temp, in which Michael played a character who took on a different job each day. Among his early experiences was a novelty appearance as a cat in Broadway’s musical Cats.
Beyond Smallville and voice work, Rosenbaum played standout roles such as Dutch Nilbog in the comedy series Breaking In, which was canceled after two seasons. He also starred in and directed the 2014 indie comedy Back in the Day, marking his feature-length directorial debut. He has participated in various other television and film projects, often bringing both comedic and dramatic depth to his roles.
Michael Rosenbaum was previously in a public relationship with actress Laura Vandervoort. Although the couple eventually separated, Rosenbaum has been occasionally linked, through speculation, to British actress and model Kelly Brook. However, he tends to keep details of his personal life private. Known for his humor, versatility, and fan-favorite portrayals, Rosenbaum remains a respected figure in entertainment.
With a career spanning voice work, comedy, directing, and dramatic performance, his net worth and acclaim continue to grow as he earns admiration from both peers and fans alike.
