Norm Macdonald was born on October 17, 1959, in Quebec City, Canada, to Percy Macdonald and Ferne Macdonald. He grew up with two brothers: a younger brother named Leslie and an older brother, Neil Macdonald, who later became a journalist for CBC News. Norm attended Quebec High School before completing his education at Gloucester High School in Ottawa, Ontario.
In 1993, Norm Macdonald joined the cast of the NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL). He quickly gained popularity for his sharp, deadpan humor and his impressions of public figures including Larry King and David Letterman. Macdonald is especially known for anchoring the show's "Weekend Update" segment, where he delivered satirical news commentary and frequently directed his irreverent humor at high-profile personalities such as Hillary Clinton, Michael Jackson, and O.J. Simpson.
After his tenure at SNL, Macdonald continued his career in comedy, and in 2005, he released a sketch comedy album on Comedy Central titled Back to Norm. The following year, he released another comedy project titled Ridiculous, showcasing his signature style of absurd humor and offbeat observations.
In addition to his entertainment career, Norm Macdonald was known to be an avid poker player. He participated in several tournaments, including the World Series of Poker. In 2007, he placed 20th in a specific preliminary event, further reflecting his enthusiasm and skill in the game, though not in the main event.
Macdonald married therapist Connie Vaillancourt in 1988. Together, they had one son, Dylan, born in 1993. The couple divorced three years later, in 1996. Despite the separation, Macdonald maintained a close relationship with his son and kept his personal life largely private.
