Richelle Carey is a news anchor at HLN. She also anchors the show ‘What Matters’, which focusses on key issues related to African American community. She is at present with Al Jazeera America. Richelle Carey studied at the Baylor University in Texas. She received her bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications over there. She was born and brought up in Houston area and was the only child to her parents. She did her schooling in an all-girls catholic school. She is a strong advocate for women and girls. She does valuable work with organizations like Men Stopping Violence and Girl Scouts. She is an avid football fan.
Career
Richelle Carey started her career in journalism as associate producer at KPRC-TV in Houston. She also worked at KWTX-TV as military reporter in Waco, Texas. She also served for some time as morning news anchor at KETK-TV in Tyler, Texas, and KVVU-TV in Las Vegas. She then shifted to KMOV to anchor various news shows there. She joined HLN, the sister channel of CNN in the year 2003. She hosted the show News 4 This Morning at KMOV. She also anchored the show News Now on weekdays and the show What Matters, which was a weekly segment. She quit HLN in 2013 and joined Al Jazeera America.
Achievements
Carey won the Emmy Award for reporting consumer features, while working at KMOV. She also won the Emerging Journalist award from Houston Association of Black Journalists. She had done some key assignments like covering Fort Hood in Texas. She also did a series on the US Cavalry stationed in Bosnia. She stayed for a week in Bosnia and did a comprehensive report on the work of the soldiers.
Carey is at present with the board of the Girls Scouts of Greater Atlanta and also part of Men Stopping Violence, which is dedicated to end the perpetual Violence that men inflict on women. She says that whenever she covers stories on abused and powerless women, it affects her profoundly and she has taken up advocacy journalism to prevent such injustices against women and girls. She has also emceed many events for MSV and started advocating only after the incident of the assault of Rihanna by Chris Brown. She always supports the development of healthy relationship between men and women.
