Samuel Jacob Bradford, widely known as Sam Bradford, is an American football quarterback who played for the Philadelphia Eagles in the National Football League (NFL), part of the National Football Conference (NFC) East division. He wore jersey number 7 during his tenure with the team.
Sam Bradford was born on November 8, 1987, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He attended Putnam City North High School, where he played football, basketball, and golf. In his senior year, Bradford excelled in both football and basketball. He threw for 2,029 yards and 17 touchdowns in football and averaged a double-double in basketball, showcasing his versatility as an athlete.
Following his impressive high school performance, Bradford accepted an athletic scholarship to the University of Oklahoma, where he played for the Oklahoma Sooners from 2006 to 2009.
As a redshirt freshman in the 2007 season, Bradford won the starting quarterback job. He made a remarkable debut, completing 21 of 23 passes with three touchdowns against the University of North Texas. In the following game, he set the school record for most consecutive pass completions with 22 straight throws.
Bradford continued his strong form, leading the Sooners to the Big 12 Championship and setting an NCAA record for most touchdown passes by a freshman with 36. His sophomore season was even more impressive; he earned the coveted Heisman Trophy in 2008 and helped Oklahoma secure its sixth Big 12 title. He chose to return for his junior season rather than declaring for the NFL Draft.
However, his junior year was marred by injuries. After injuring his shoulder twice early in the season, Bradford underwent surgery, which ultimately ended his college career prematurely.
Despite coming off surgery, Bradford was selected as the first overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams. He signed a six-year contract worth $78 million, including $50 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid NFL rookie at the time.
Bradford began his NFL career strongly, being named the Rams' starting quarterback in September 2010. He set multiple rookie records, including most completions, most consecutive completions, and most pass attempts for a rookie—surpassing marks previously held by Peyton Manning. For his performance, Bradford was named the Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
The following two seasons were mixed, with the Rams struggling overall, despite Bradford posting a personal best in passing yards in 2012. In 2013, he was having a promising season before tearing his left ACL midway through the year. Unfortunately, he re-injured the same ACL in the 2014 preseason, sidelining him for the entire season and bringing his time with the Rams to an end.
Bradford joined the Philadelphia Eagles, where he continued to showcase his talent. In 2016, he signed a two-year contract extension worth $36 million. Though his tenure with the Eagles had ups and downs, he played a critical role during his time with the team and contributed to notable performances, further solidifying his reputation as a capable quarterback in the NFL.
Bradford is a practicing Christian and is of partial Cherokee descent (1/16th). In March 2016, he got engaged to his longtime girlfriend, Emma Lavy. As of that year, Bradford’s net worth was estimated at approximately $25 million.
