Sean Combs was born in 1969 in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. His mother, Janice Combs, was a model and a teacher's assistant, while his father, Melvin Combs, was connected to Frank Lucas, a convicted drug dealer. Melvin Combs was tragically killed in his car in Central Park West when Sean was a young child.
Sean was raised in Mount Vernon, New York, and attended Mount Saint Michael Academy, a Roman Catholic high school. He graduated in 1987, having excelled as a football player. He earned the nickname "Puff" during his childhood because he would "huff and puff" when he became angry.
Combs began his career as a talent director at Uptown Records before founding his own record label, Bad Boy Entertainment, in 1993. He quickly rose to prominence in the music industry as a hip hop recording artist, record producer, and entrepreneur.
Under the stage names Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, and later simply Diddy, he released a number of successful albums. His debut album, No Way Out (1997), was certified seven-times platinum and marked a turning point in his career. It was followed by other successful albums including Forever (1999), The Saga Continues... (2001), and Press Play (2006).
In 2009, Combs formed the musical group Diddy-Dirty Money alongside singers Dawn Richard and Kalenna Harper. Their debut album, Last Train to Paris (2010), received critical acclaim and achieved commercial success for its innovative blend of electro-pop, hip hop, and R&B stylings.
Throughout his music career, Combs has received multiple honors, including three Grammy Awards and two MTV Video Music Awards. He also served as executive producer for the MTV reality show Making the Band, further expanding his influence in the entertainment world.
Outside of music, Sean Combs has been highly successful as an entrepreneur. He launched two clothing lines: Sean John and Sean by Sean Combs. His fashion work earned him the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Award for Menswear Designer of the Year in 2004. His business empire also includes ownership of two restaurants and a movie production company.
In 2015, Forbes estimated Sean Combs's net worth to be over $735 million, highlighting his diversified business portfolio and long-standing success across industries.
Sean Combs is the father of six children. His first son, Justin, was born to his high school sweetheart, designer Misa Hylton. Justin attended UCLA on a football scholarship. Combs had a long-term relationship with model Kimberly Porter, during which he adopted her son Quincy and had a son, Christian, with her. Together, they also had twin daughters, Jessie James and D’Lila Star. Prior to the twins’ birth, Combs had a daughter named Chance with Sarah Chapman. Although he has maintained active involvement in his children's lives, Combs has never married any of their mothers.
