Sean Patrick Hannity was born on December 30, 1961, in New York City, New York, to parents Lillian and Hugh Hannity, both of Irish descent. He grew up with two sisters and attended Sacred Heart Seminary in Hempstead, followed by St. Pius X Preparatory Seminary School. Although not widely recognized during his school years, Hannity has spoken openly about his challenges during adolescence. He later attended New York University and Adelphi University but did not complete a degree at either institution.
Hannity launched his radio career in 1989 at KCSB-FM, a college radio station at the University of California, Santa Barbara, while also working in construction. With little prior experience, he hosted a weekly show for approximately 40 hours before the station canceled the program due to controversy around the content. Reflecting on that time, Hannity admitted in an interview, "I wasn't good at it. I was terrible." He promoted himself as “the most talked about college radio host in America” to gain attention and professional opportunities.
Soon after, he was hired by WVNN in Athens, Alabama, and later hosted a talk show on WGST in Atlanta, Georgia. These early opportunities provided significant on-air experience and helped Hannity establish a foothold in conservative media.
Hannity’s major break in television came in 1996 when Roger Ailes, the co-founder of Fox News, selected him to co-host a new political talk show alongside liberal commentator Alan Colmes. The program, initially referred to as Hannity and LTBD, was later officially titled Hannity & Colmes. The show gained popularity for its point-counterpoint style, with Hannity presenting conservative perspectives and Colmes providing liberal commentary.
Following Colmes' departure in 2008, Hannity launched his own solo show, Hannity, which has since become one of Fox News Channel’s flagship programs. Before that, in 2007, he hosted Hannity's America, which aired on Sunday nights and focused on political analysis from a conservative viewpoint.
Hannity's influence spans both television and radio media. He continues to host The Sean Hannity Show, a nationally syndicated radio program, which remains one of the most-listened-to talk radio shows in the United States. His consistent performance has earned him widespread recognition, including being ranked second on Talkers Magazine’s 2009 list of the 100 most important radio talk show hosts in America. Additionally, he received the Marconi Award from the National Association of Broadcasters in both 2003 and 2007 for Network Syndicated Personality of the Year.
In addition to his broadcast career, Hannity is the author of three politically themed books, all of which became New York Times bestsellers. These include Let Freedom Ring: Winning the War of Liberty over Liberalism, Deliver Us from Evil: Defeating Terrorism, Despotism, and Liberalism, and Conservative Victory: Defeating Obama’s Radical Agenda, published in 2010. Throughout his work, Hannity has positioned himself as a prominent conservative political commentator.
Over the years, Hannity has built a large social media following and remains active on platforms such as Twitter, where he engages with fans and discusses political developments. As of recent estimates, his net worth is approximately $60 million, reflecting his long-standing success in both radio and television broadcasting.
